Samples and Huynh capture SJGT Championship overall titles

This year’s SJGT Championship was hosted at the prestigious Atlanta Country Club on July 31st and August 1st. Atlanta Country Club (ACC) proved to be a fantastic venue for our players – the course was very difficult but in great condition. ACC has hosted many high-profile tournaments in its history, including the inaugural PGA Tour Players Championship – which is now held at TPC Sawgrass. All in all, Atlanta Country Club was the perfect location to showcase some of our tour’s best players. The two overall champions were Isaac Samples of Loganville, GA and Thienna Huynh of Lilburn, GA. Samples came away as male champion with his scores of 75-67 for a two-under total. Huynh used a strong second round to edge the female overall Championship, with scores of 74-71 for a one-over total. Each of our divisions was packed with talent and that showed in some of our very low scores.

The male 16-19 division was won by our overall male champion – Isaac Samples. Racking up seven birdies in round two, Samples won his division title by three strokes over Sam Lape with his 142 total. The Atlanta resident, Lape, posted steady scores of 71 and 74 to finish at one over par (145) for the Championship. Close behind Lape was 16-year-old Suwanee, GA resident Preston Topper. Round one for Topper was very solid, with just one birdie and one bogey on his way to a 72. He then continued his strong play with a second round 74, to wrap up third place in his division with a 146 total.

The low scores continued in the male 14-15 division: Buck Brumlow fired the low round of the tournament in his second round 66. Seven birdies and just one bogey catapulted the 14-year-old Brumlow up the 14-15 division leaderboard and into first place. Buck Brumlow finished with a 143 total. Second place Evans Gross also had a strong second round. Gross, from Birmingham, AL, came back with a 70 in round two on his way to one-over par 145 total. One stroke behind Gross, and in third place, was Jones Free. Having made eight birdies over the course of the two rounds, Free shot 73-73 for a 146 total.

In the male 12-13 division, we saw tremendous scoring and our low total for the Championship. Picking up first place in the division, and firing the low total of the week, Ballou Phillips shot two rounds in the 60s. Rounds of 68 and 69 gave 13-year-old Phillips a seven-under total of 137. Also coming in with an under-par total was Parker Bell of Tallahassee, FL. Bell scored consistent rounds of 70 and 73 to give his 143 total. Wrapping up the male 12-13 division was Harris Barth of Atlanta, GA. Barth shot 73 and 71 to finish at even par for the Championship and gain some valuable SJGT points.

Moving into the female 15-19 division and Kimberly Shen came away with the division title. Shen scored 76 and 71 for a 147 total over the tricky Atlanta Country Club layout. Shen made four birdies in her final round 71 and picked up a total of 2000 SJGT points. In second place was Kate Mashburn of Calhoun, GA with her rounds of 76 and 79. Mashburn made seven birdies over the two rounds and was also three-under par after her first six holes of the Championship. Rounding out the female 15-19 division was Mary Mac Trammell. The Mountain Brook, AL resident shot rounds of 78 and 79 on her way to a 157 total.

The winner of the female 12-14 division was our overall female champion, Thienna Huynh. The 13-year old from Lilburn, GA shot 74 and 71 on her way to the division and overall titles. Coming in second in the female 12-14 division, and wrapping up the awards from the SJGT Championship, was Jordyn Hodgson. Second place in her division gave Hodgson 1700 SJGT points.

On a final note, everyone from the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour would like to thank Atlanta Country Club for their hosting and hospitality. The SJGT Championship was a tremendous success, thanks to all our players, parents, coaches, and spectators in attendance.
