Beach, Cook and Rosario-Sauri lead Seminole Junior Classic

After a month of heavy play, college tournaments and junior events, the Seminole Golf Course at FSU was in excellent condition for round one today. Despite the volume of recent play, the greens rolled true and the general course condition was presented perfectly to our 111-player field. Taking advantage of the golf course and weather conditions were Jay Beach, Katherine Cook and Paola Roasario-Sauri – the trio lead the overall male and female championships between them.

One of two overall female leaders, Katherine Cook finds herself alone at the top of the female 12-14 division leaderboard. Cook’s round of 75 on the par-73 Seminole GC, contained three birdies. The Thomasville, GA native posted a two-under par 35 on the back nine to take a two-shot lead. Sabree Lefebvre sits in second in the division, after her opening round of 77. Lefebvre made two birdies today and holds a three-shot advantage over third place. The youngest female in the field, Sydney Papke, sits in third place. Papke shot a first-round 80.

Leading the female 15-19 division, and tied for the overall female championship lead, is Paola Rosario-Sauri. The Crestview, FL native had a very clean scorecard, making 14 pars in her opening round. Second in the division is Kaide Farne. The 2018-grad shot an opening round of 76 (+3). Rounding out the top three in the division is Reese Drezins. After her opening round of 77, Drezins sits just two strokes off the division and overall female lead.

After an impressive opening round of 71 (-2), Cole Komyati leads the way in the male 12-13 division. Komyati made four birdies over his opening 18 holes and leads the division by five strokes. Tied for second place, with scores of 76 (+3), are Rylan Black and Marshall Butler. Both players, residing in Georgia, will be hoping for a charge early tomorrow in an attempt to close the gap at the top.

Three players lead the way in the male 14-15 division. Harry Jones, Jake Springer, and Evan Woosley-Reed all shot 74 in the opening round and hold the division co-lead. Jones, from Augusta, GA, made just two bogeys today and kept a very clean scorecard. Springer birdied both 17 and 18 to finish his round at one-over par. Woosley-Reed, from Shelbyville, TN, can be pleased with today’s performance and will be looking to break away in tomorrow’s final round.

Fresh off a victory at the SJGT Sea Island Junior Classic, Jay Beach finds himself in familiar territory atop the male 16-19 leaderboard today. Beach shot one of only two under-par rounds from the longer, black tees, with his opening round of 71 (-2). Despite making two double bogeys, Beach was able to post six birdies in his round -  the Augusta, GA native made four birdies in his closing five holes. Sitting in second place, with an opening round of 72 (-1), is Jack McDonald. Nine pars on the back nine kept McDonald within one of the division and overall male lead. Tied for third in the division are John Calhoun and Dawson Farni. Both players posted rounds of 74 and will be looking to challenge the leaders tomorrow.

We will again be running an 8:30AM shotgun start tomorrow. Thank you to all players and parents – a 111-player field in February is very impressive and we are happy to be able to provide you all a depth of competition rarely rivaled in the South.
